Mayor Hecke Signs Girl Scout Week Proclamation

Saturday, March 12, 2011 marks the 99th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia.

Throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has helped build millions of girls and women of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting’s unique leadership development program, girls define leadership by discovering, connecting, and taking action in their communities.

Girl Scouting helps girls care about, inspire and team with others locally and globally. Girl Scouting girls learn to understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.

With dedication, time, and talent of volunteers of different backgrounds, abilities, and areas of expertise, the Girl Scouts Program serves close to 11,000 girls in grades K-12 across the Girl Scouts – Diamonds Council. More than 3.7 million Girl Scout members nationwide will be celebrating  99 years of this American tradition with nearly 50 million women who grew up participating in Girl Scouting. These girls exemplify the impact of this empowering movement that emphasizes helping others and community service.

Join us in celebrating Girl Scouts’ 99th year. It’s Girl Scout Week! Congratulations Girl Scouts!
